Koroneihana Cancellation

PRESS RELEASE

EMBARGOED UNTIL
14 August 2020 | 4:30 pm

The 14th Koroneihana Anniversary will be celebrated in a very different way.

It was intended to hold the annual celebrations on the 20th and 21st August however the safety of our people is paramount, therefore a decision has been made with this consideration in mind to cancel the annual celebrations at Turangawaewae.

Koroneihana is generally celebrated with poowhiri, kapa haka, sports games, kawe mate and mihimihi. The risk at present is significant and therefore the 14th annual Koroneihana will be celebrated in a new and different way.

There will be an online presence, via the Kiingitanga Social Media networks, to ensure we honour and recognise this day and all it stands for. On the 21st of August the King’s annual address will be broadcasted along with Karakia and other footage to celebrate the day.

This year Kiingi Tuheitia invites Te Iwi Maaori to celebrate Koroneihana in a new way from the safety and comfort of your home.

The King thanks all those who regularly attend and support the organisation of Koroneihana “your commitment and contributions are greatly appreciated. I wish you all safety and good health as we forge ahead,” said Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII.

At this time nothing is more important than caring for the well-being of our people.

“Amohia ake te ora o te iwi, kia puta ki te whei ao.”
