when’s all this election stuff happening?

Voting in the 2020 General Election and referendums starts on Saturday 3, Whiringa-ā-nuku | October and finishes at 7pm on election day, on Saturday 17, Whiringa-ā-nuku | October.

Whānau, you must be aged at least 18 years and you need to be enrolled to vote.

HOW MANY VOTES DO i GET?

You get two (2) votes in the General Election – a Party vote and an Electorate vote.

Now, in this election you also have two (2) votes in the referendums about legalising recreational cannabis and assisted dying. These votes are optional – over to you if you want to have your say on the two pātai.

REFErendum pātai – what’s this about?

You have the option to vote in two referendums: the End of Life Choice and cannabis legalisation referendums.

EnD OF LIFE CHOICE REFERENDUM

In this referendum, you can vote on whether the End of Life Choice Act 2019 should come into force. The Act would give people with a terminal illness the option of requesting assisted dying.

The referendum question is:

Do you support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force?

You can choose 1 of these 2 answers:

  • Yes, I support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force, OR
  • No, I do not support the End of Life Choice Act 2019 coming into force.
Cannabis Legalisation and Control REFERENDUM

In this referendum, you can vote on whether the recreational use of cannabis should become legal.

The referendum question is:

Do you support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill?

You can choose 1 of these 2 answers:

  • Yes, I support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill, OR
  • No, I do not support the proposed Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill.

If you are Māori, you can choose between the Māori roll and the general roll when you first enrol to vote.

Once you’re enrolled, you can only change rolls during the Māori Electoral Option, which is usually held every 5 years.

Waiariki Electorate profile

The Waiariki electorate’s eastern border begins at Cape Runaway on the East Cape of the North Island. From there it extends south west to south of Turangi and the Kaimanawa Mountains. The western boundary then tracks north – incorporating the western edge of Lake Taupō and the area west of Rotorua – before terminating at the Bay of Plenty coast at Waihi Beach.
