He Panui – 10 September 2019

Tēnā koutou katoa,

On behalf of the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, we wish to inform our Ngati Tuwharetoa whānau that our CEO, Topia Rameka has taken up a fixed-term opportunity with the public service.

From 7 October 2019 he will take on the inaugural role of Deputy Chief Executive – Māori, at the Department of Corrections for a period of three years.

Topia will stay involved in the mahi of the Trust Board in an advisory capacity during this time and remains committed to supporting our kaupapa – Mahi Rangatira ki te Iwi. In light of this, the Trust Board is currently considering the appointment of an Acting Chief Executive for the next three years – an announcement will be made shortly.

We have been very fortunate to have had the leadership of Topia over the past five years as CEO, where he has led a very capable team that has grown from strength to strength and recorded some considerable achievements over that time.

As the new Deputy CE – Māori, Topia will be responsible for leading and implementing the Department of Corrections’ Hōkai Rangi strategy, the new matua strategy for the Government.

We are very proud that he will be contributing to a major area impacting Māori across Aotearoa and will be working towards ensuring there is a committed Māori voice at the decision-making table, with respect to Te Ao Māori, to tackle the over-representation of Māori in our prisons, breaking the cycle of reoffending and reversing the status quo.

We wish Topia all the best – he has our full support and encouragement as he takes up this opportunity.

Noho ora mai,

John Bishara
