Decision of the Environment Court – Rotokawa

Environment Court rules in favour of Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board

Tena tatou,

Ko te tumanako kei te noho mahana koe ko to whanau, i tenei wa o te hotoke.

In early 2017, the Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board, at the request of our Tauhara Hapu, lodged an appeal against the Waikato Regional Council’s decision to grant various resource consents to Rotokawa Joint Venture Limited to access the geothermal resource beneath Lake Rotokawa.

This appeal was heard by the Environment Court in July 2017.

The appeal claimed the Council did not take into account Tūwharetoa mana whenua and cultural interests at Rotokawa and sought new conditions of those consents to enable Ngāti Tūwharetoa to exercise our kaitiaki responsibilities.

The decision of the Environment Court was released yesterday and the Court has ruled in our favour – view decision here.

A media statement has also been released – view here.

Nga mihi maioha,

Topia Rameka
Chief Executive Officer
