Greater fishing opportunities in Lake Taupō

With the new fishing season about to start on 1 July, a number of changes to the Taupō Fishery will come into effect.

The main changes are:

  • You can take home more trout – the daily bag limit will increase from 3 to 6 fish
  • The fish size limit will drop from 40cm to 35cm
  • New whānau licence categories for rangatahi and seniors
  • Fly fishing around stream mouths reduces from 300m to 200m

These changes have been a long time coming and we support the use of adaptive management techniques that are focussed on ensuring that the quality of the fishery is improving, and the fishing experience is rewarding for fishing enthusiasts of all age groups and gender.
